Tax Deductions for Auto Repair: What Owners Commonly Miss

Last updated: October 17, 2026Written by Shane Atkins, founder of TaxSaver Pro

Auto repair shops pour money into tools, parts, and shop overhead, with costs spread across every job. It's easy to let a deductible cost get paid and forgotten. This guide walks through the deductions auto repair owners most often miss.

Commonly missed deductions

01Tools and equipment

What qualifies
Diagnostic gear, hand tools, and shop equipment.
What doesn't qualify
The personal-use share of tools you also use at home, tools a client reimburses you for, and items already billed into a job and counted as cost of goods.
Records to keep
The receipt or invoice showing date, vendor, item, and amount. For larger equipment, also record the date you started using it in the business and its business-use percentage.

02Parts and supplies

What qualifies
Oil, fluids, and consumables used per job.
What doesn't qualify
Materials for personal projects, materials a client paid for directly, and materials already counted in cost of goods sold (don't deduct them twice).
Records to keep
Receipts or invoices listing the items, and a note of the job or project they were used on.

03Home office

What qualifies
Space for scheduling, billing, and parts ordering.
What doesn't qualify
Space also used for personal or family purposes, occasional or incidental work at home, and costs for parts of the home not used for business. W-2 employees working from home generally can't take this deduction on their federal return.
Records to keep
Measurements of the office and of the whole home, a photo or floor plan of the space, and, if you use the regular method, rent or mortgage interest statements, utility bills, homeowner's or renter's insurance, and repair receipts.

04Licenses and insurance

What qualifies
Shop liability and environmental compliance.
What doesn't qualify
Personal insurance policies, and fines or penalties for environmental or safety violations. Costs to comply with environmental rules (waste disposal, permits) qualify; penalties for breaking them don't.
Records to keep
Policy declaration pages, premium invoices, permit and inspection fees, hazardous waste disposal invoices, and proof of payment.

05Vehicle and mileage

What qualifies
Parts runs and customer pickups.
What doesn't qualify
Commuting between your home and a regular workplace, personal errands and trips, the personal-use share of a mixed-use vehicle, traffic tickets and fines, and claiming both the standard mileage rate and actual expenses for the same vehicle in the same year.
Records to keep
A mileage log kept as you go, showing date, destination, business purpose, and miles for each trip; odometer readings at the start and end of the year; parking and toll receipts; and receipts for gas, repairs, and insurance if you use the actual expense method.
